Uçhisar is best known for its towering castle, the highest point in Cappadocia, but the village itself is worth slowing down for. Compared to the busy hub of Göreme, Uçhisar has a quieter, more local feel. The streets are lined with small shops, local houses, and boutique hotels carved into the rock. Staying here gives you a different perspective on Cappadocia—less crowded, less touristic, but with everything you need at your doorstep.
Most visitors stop by for an hour or two to climb the castle, but Uçhisar rewards those who linger. Whether it’s wandering the lanes, following trails into the valleys, or watching sunrise and sunset from the ridges, the town has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a great base.
Walking around Uçhisar town
Beyond the castle and trails, Uçhisar itself is a pleasant place to wander. The streets are quieter than Göreme, with more of a lived-in feel. You’ll find small shops selling carpets, pottery, and dried fruit, as well as cafés and guesthouses tucked into stone buildings.

Walking through town gives you a closer look at daily life. Details like baskets of wool by a shopfront, displays of handmade carpets, or bowls of dried apricots add to the atmosphere. These small scenes, often overlooked by day-trippers, are part of what makes visiting Uçhisar rewarding.

The town also has some excellent boutique hotels, many of them cave-style, where you can enjoy views of the valleys and balloons from your terrace.
Climbing Uçhisar Castle
The main landmark is Uçhisar Castle, a natural rock citadel that has been hollowed out over centuries. Climbing to the top gives you the best panoramic view in Cappadocia. From the summit you can see Göreme, Ortahisar, Avanos, and the distant peak of Mount Erciyes.

The climb itself takes you through carved chambers and narrow steps, with viewpoints along the way. The castle is also an important historical site, once used as a stronghold and refuge. Today it remains one of the most rewarding experiences in the region.

Uçhisar Castle walking trails
Around the base of the castle are walking paths that lead into Cappadocia’s valleys. These trails are simple but scenic, offering some of the best views of the rock fortress itself. You can wander through orchards and ridges, or connect directly to Pigeon Valley and White Valley.

Walking the trails gives you the chance to appreciate Uçhisar Castle from different angles, while also exploring the natural landscape. It’s also a great area to launch a drone, as the aerial views capture the castle and valleys in full scale.

We’ve written a full post on the Uçhisar Castle walking trails.
Sunrise and sunset from Uçhisar Castle
In the morning, the ridges around the castle are a perfect place to watch the sunrise. This is when Cappadocia’s famous balloons take to the air, filling the sky with color. From Uçhisar, you get a wide panorama with the balloons drifting over the valleys.

The ridges are less crowded than the castle itself, and the atmosphere is calm. The light is soft, the fields glow in pale colors, and the balloons rise slowly into the sky. Watching sunrise here is one of the highlights of staying in Uçhisar. For more on the best viewpoints, see our post on sunrise from Uçhisar Castle.

Sunset is also one of the best times to be at the castle. The light turns the rock a deep shade of pink and casts long shadows across the valleys. From the top, you get a 360-degree view, which means you can watch the sun drop behind the horizon while still looking out toward the pink cliffs and fairy chimneys catching the last of the light.
House of Memories: vegan clay pot
Uçhisar has several restaurants worth trying, but one of the most memorable meals we had was at House of Memories. This cozy spot serves traditional Cappadocian dishes, and the lovely owner Bayram made a vegan version of the clay pot specialty just for us.

The clay pot is sealed and slow-cooked, then cracked open at the table. The vegan version is packed with vegetables and flavor, making it a great option for plant-based travelers. House of Memories also has a welcoming atmosphere, with terrace seating and views of the town.

Beyond the great food, Bayram, the chef and owner, is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. We'd often stay for a bit long after finishing our food just to enjoy some conversations with him.

We highly recommend stopping here, whether you’re staying in Uçhisar or visiting for the day. For more details, see our post on our clay pot meal.
